Healthy Holiday Tips After Weight Loss Surgery

Planning a trip after surgery

A holiday should be relaxing, but travelling shortly after weight loss surgery can feel stressful without the right preparation. Most patients are advised to stay close to home for at least 2 to 3 weeks after surgery, so that any complications can be treated quickly. Recovery speed varies from person to person, so always check with your doctor before booking a trip.

Prepare well before you travel

Good planning makes your holiday much easier. Research hospitals or doctors at your destination who have experience treating patients who have had weight loss surgery.

Pack all the medication you need, including options for nausea and diarrhoea, and keep your surgeon’s contact details with you. It also helps to carry a short note, in English, that states you have had weight loss surgery, along with your medications and an emergency contact.

Choosing the right accommodation also helps. Self-catering accommodation gives you more flexibility and makes it easier to stick to your eating plan.

Travel insurance is essential

Before travelling, make sure your travel insurance covers problems related to your surgery, and tell your insurer that you have had weight loss surgery. Some policies do not cover complications from your procedure unless the insurer has been informed. This protection is especially important in case you need medical support abroad.

Take care on the flight

Long flights carry a risk of blood clots, and that risk is higher after surgery. Walk around the cabin every hour, do simple ankle exercises in your seat and drink plenty of water, as cabin air is very drying. Compression stockings are also worth wearing on flights over four hours to support circulation.

Do not skip your vitamins

It is easy to fall out of routine on holiday, but missing your vitamin and mineral supplements for even a short time can lead to tiredness and hair loss. Pack enough for your whole trip, plus a few extra days, and keep them in your hand luggage rather than your checked bag.

How to enjoy your trip comfortably

Once you are on holiday, listen closely to your body. Eat small portions, chew thoroughly and avoid foods that are fatty, very sweet or cause bloating.

Stay well hydrated, as water is especially important for digestion and your metabolism after surgery.

Keep moving during your trip. Light activity supports your wellbeing and can help prevent constipation.

If you are spending time in the sun, use sunscreen with a high protection factor and drink enough fluids to avoid dehydration.

When to seek medical advice

If you are unsure about a symptom or notice any unusual discomfort, seek medical help right away. It is always better to get checked than to take risks while you are far from home.

With the right preparation and mindful habits, you can enjoy a relaxed and healthy holiday after weight loss surgery.
